On the 3rd of July, 1863, entering the third day of
the Battle of Gettysburg, General Lee decided
to attack the centre of the Union army in postion along
Cemetary Ridge. General Meade, Commander of the Army
of the Potomac, had correctly deduced that the Confederates
would attack his centre.
For an hour or more the Confederate artillery on Seminary
Ridge fired at the Union positions, but to little effect
due to their extreme range. At 3.00 pm the attack commenced.
Suffice to say, the Confederates were soundly defeated.
They had to cross a mile of open, flat terrain whilst
being shot at by Union artillery and, when they got
closer, Union Infantry. The ranks of the Confederates
were decimated.
At the end of the battle General Pickett, when asked
to tend to his Division, replied "I no longer have
a divsion". Thus ended the Battle of Gettysburg
and the last offensive campaign by the Army of Northern
Virginia, ensuring eventual victory for the Union in
the civil war.
Play the game and find out why it was just too hard
an attack for the Confederates to win. Either side is
good to play as both will teach you how to play Line
of Muskets.
TIPS
There aren't any real tips that will save
you if you are the Confederate. The best tip is to call
off the attack, but that is another story (no one will
ever really know why Gen. Lee did it).
The only piece of advice is concentrate
your forces, pick a spot in the line, and go for it.
And it doesn't really matter what spot you pick because,
chances are, you will still die.
As the Union player, have fun on the turkey
shoot. But make sure you concentrate your artillery
when the rebs are at long range. When they get closer
it won't matter as the canister will take care of what's
left.
Enjoy.
