The Confederate steamroller gets underway.
The Battle of Corinth was the
South's attempt to retake western Tennessee after the
loss at Shiloh.
The importance of Corinth was its junction
of the Moblie-Ohio and the Memphis-Charleston railways.
Recapturing Corinth would also enable Van Dorn to link
up with Gen. Bragg's army in Tennessee.
The town had some trenchworks previously
constructed by the Confederates, who vacated Corinth
after Shiloh. There were not enough Northern troops
to occupy them. However, they did provide some protection.
After the Confederates had managed to maneuver their
way around the trenches, the race was on for the town.
The next day, on the 4th, the Confederates
assaults were uncoordinated, and the Unioni batteries
in the town inflicted enormous casuatlies. At 2.00 pm
on the 4th the Confederates retreated and The Battle
of Corinth was over. At the end the rebs had 4,500
casaulties to the Union's 2,300.
TIPS
The North cannot really afford to stay
around and fight the South in the trenches. There are
just not enough troops to form a good defensive line.
Plus your troops are not concentrated. You have to give
ground, perhaps withdrawing completely, to give your
troops on the western edge a chance to move up and join
with the rest of your army.
It's also a good idea to try to lay an
ambush for the Confederates. Let them come on somewhere
only to find they have troops to their front and sides,
perhaps even their rear. Use the terrain to your advantage
to hide your troops.
The South. Well, they have to press ahead,
try to contact the North and start destroying brigades
before they can move back and form a stronger defensive
line.
In this battle you only get the first
day (day 2 is coming). So player's don't have to be
concerned about keeping their men for fighting in the
morning.
