Orders for Brigades

Any Brigade that is within the command radius of the its Divisional commander of 6 hexes can be given orders. If the brigade is outside the commander’s radius there is a 50% chance that the orders may still get through. However, at critical points in the battle it can be very bad if the orders do not get through. So it is advisable that your make sure your Divisional commanders are always within range of their brigades.

The following orders can be given to brigades:

Stand The brigade does not move. It will shoot at enemy units that are in range of 3 hexes.
Move

This command allows a brigade to move. Where the brigade can move to will be highlighted on the screen. This depends on where its command zone (see command zones) is and how far the brigade can move. There will be a purple/blue hex (see below); drag the purple/blue hex to where you want the brigade to move to.

Charge

The brigade will attempt to close with the enemy and fight them in “close combat”. That is, rather than shooting at the enemy they will attempt to fight the enemy with rifle butt and bayonet. When this command is given the possible targets will be highlighted. One possible target will be highlighted with a red hex. To choose another target from the highlighted possible targets, merely click on the red hex and drag it to your chosen target for the brigade. A brigade may perform a charge move directly ahead, or after an “about face” command, but may not be given after a “wheel” command.

However, a brigade that is in field column or march column can perform a "turn" before a charge, and so can charge in just about any direction. The turn order does not have to be given and will be performed automatically when the charge command is given.

Change formation

This allows the brigade to change from one formation to another. Refer to the list of eligible formations below.

Turn (if in
march column)

The head of the column will turn to face the direction you choose. Click on the “hex-side” icon to indicate which direction you want the column to be face.

When changing from column into battle line or supported line, choose “turn” before choosing “change formation” and you can select a direction for your line formation rather than having your battle line form in the same direction your column was facing.

About face The unit changes direction by 180 degrees.
Wheel (if in battle or supported line)

Your brigade will move like a “gate”, swinging in the direction you choose.

Resupply

When a brigade runs out of ammunition it has to resupply to get more ammunition. In order to resupply it has to be given the resupply command, and it cannot be shot at or charged by the enemy. If both of these things occur, then it will be resupplied at the end of the turn.

Otherwise it will continue to have a lessened musketry fire power (see modifiers).

You can command a Brigade to use one of several different formations. These are:

Battle line

This allows the Brigade to have maximum fire power (with muskets) to the front.

This is also the only formation that Cavalry brigades can fire in. If they are in any other formation, Cavalry are considered on horseback and cannot shoot.

Supported line

The fire power is not as good as an extended line. However, this is the best formation if the Brigade is going to perform a charge. Because the Brigade is in 2 lines, it means that more men are being concentrated in a smaller area, which is better for close combat.

March Column

This is the only formation that allows a brigade to use the faster movement offered by roads. This is the formation to use when the Brigade wants to get somewhere fast. However, it is extremely vulnerable to fire and attack from all sides. So only use this when you know that the enemy are no where around and cannot attack you. It is also the only formation Brigades can use in order to cross a bridge.

Field
Column

This is great for moving around the battlefield but not as vulnerable as the March column.
